You can move the items into a room that unoccupied. This includes anything hanging on the walls. NOW that your room is empty, you will need to walk around the room looking for nails. Simply take your hammer and walk up to a nail, placing the V side of the hammer head against the wall with the nail between the v. Slide the v down the nail until, the nail can be lifted. Take your hammer, and gently tap the holes that were made by the nails. This will push down the old paint, and the dry wall that was lifted when the nails were removed. At this time, you will need to remove all the cover plates on the light switches and plugs in the room. Take your screw driver and remove; the screw or screws that are holding it mounted on the wall. There can be up to four screws, hut the traditional ones usually have one screw. Avoid touching any of the wires; this will shock you. If there are children around you when you are painting; keep the cover plates on the ones you are not facing, This will help you work better, and not having to worry what the children are doing. You can always go back and paint around them, when it is safe to do so. If you are worried about being shocked, you can go to the fuse box and shut the power off to the room that you are painting. Other items you may want to remove are fans, vent covers, and thermometers. This will protect them from getting paint on them. It takes more time to scratch the paint Off these items then it is to simply remove them from the wall. Now take your tub of sparkling and open it. Take your putty knife and mix at least the first inch Of the sparkling. Losing your putty knife take a small amount and go where there is a hole in the wall. Place the putty knife flat n the wall where the hole is, and gently make a stroke over it. This Will rill the hole. Fifth hole does not fill, repeat this step. Try leaving a minimal amount as possible. If there is too much left on the wall, this will cause lumps that will not match the texture of your wall. If this does happen take a damp towel and wipe the lump that needs to be reduced. If the sparkling has dried, you can use a piece of sand paper to even out the lump. Take the sand paper, rough side down, while using some pressure and rub like you are scrubbing a stain out. Continue owing this until the lump is even With the wall. Place the tip side that is cut diagonally against the corner. Make a thin line from the ceiling down to the base board. Immediately take a damp towel, and gently rub using your finger, and go over the thin line of caulking. Now that all the holes have been filled, it is now time to caulk all the corners Of the walls, base boards, and Windows. First you Will need your caulking gun, and a tube of caulking. Now take your tube of caulking; make a diagonal cut at the tip. Now go to a corner of the room where you will like to start. .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 , .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 .postImageUrl , .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 , .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78:hover , .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78:visited , .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78:active { border:0!important; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78:active , .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78 .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u204511b2b537807b49bc3937e70d0e78:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: William Bouguereau's Dante's Inferno: Painting Description EssayBe sure not to use too much force; this will simply remove your caulking. This process will cover any cracks, and also give the corner a new look. Go around the whole room doing this. Once you have completed this process, you are now ready to tape the flooring and base boards of the room. Take your painter tape and place it along the base of the floor, windows, and frames that you want to protect. The tape should be placed on the base and not the wall. Press the tape down with pressure, to prevent the paint from going underneath the tape. Any air pockets will leave paint on the bases. As you are taping: make sure that you dust your bases before applying tape. The dust will make it harder for the tape to stick to the base. Also the dust will stick to the paint brush and roller, which will be painted onto the wall. When you have completed these steps, you are now ready to paint the room. This next step will be prepping your walls for the rolling process. Take the stick that you received when you bought the paint, and open your can of paint. Take the stick and mix the paint good. If the paint has gloss in it, you Will notice that all the gloss is at the top. Glossy paint takes more time to mix then a flat paint. When you are finished mixing the paint, pour some into something that is convenient, such as a small bucket, bowl, or the can of paint itself will be fine. Starting with the ceiling take your paint, and dip your paint brush in the paint. You Will need to put the paint brush half way into the paint. This will load your brush. When you start painting the corners of the ceiling, make long strokes back and forth. This will make painting easier, when it comes to the rolling. The roller does not always get into the ceiling corners. Always give the edges two coatings of paint. The roller holds a greater deal of paint than the paint brush. Once the ceiling corners are painted, do all of the edges including around the door frames, windows, and base boards. Ay doing this, you are allowing the paint on the ceiling to dry before you take the roller to it. The walls are now prepped; now grab your roller and the roller pan. Pour enough paint into the pan, so that the paint is about half an inch from the top of the deepest part tot the pan: dip your roller in the pan. You will promptly make award and backward stokes in the paint, This loads the roller with paint. Take your roller to the place on the ceiling where you started with the paint brush. Place the roller into pan and start rolling forward and backward, Make sure if the roller is skipping as you are painting that you go and reload the roller. This will save you time and energy at the once Continue doing this until the ceiling is painted. Once the ceiling is painted, you can now paint the rest of the walls in the room, Allow the wall to fully dry, at least two hours. Finally, once the walls are reed, you will need to walk around the room looking at the walls to see if there are any places that did not receive an even coat of paint. You will be looking for places that are lighter than others. You will then apply another coat of paint using your roller. When the walls are dried after the touch ups, you may began removing the painters tape. Gently peel the tape off slowly. You are now ready to Start the cleaning process. Using lukewarm water, rinse Off the paint brush, roller, roller pan, and putty knife. Make sure that you shake the water from the mint brush and the roller well. NOW that your walls have a new look to them, you are now ready to bring all your stuff into the room again. Once you know the walls are fully dry, you may start hanging all your belongings back on them. .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 , .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 .postImageUrl , .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 , .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127:hover , .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127:visited , .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127:active { border:0!important; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127:active , .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127 .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u6171b88539fd70be308a7f4161a4d127:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Norman Rockwell's Paintings EssaySet you furniture as desired, leaving about an inch veneer the walls and furniture. Soc112 Soc112-X221- Killing Us Softly Essay Justine Slater Professor Greene November 4, 2012 Soc – 112-X221 Killing Us Softly The lecture â€Å"Killing us Softly† gave focuses on how women are portrayed in advertising and our role in society. Her delivery was filled with warm remarks and quick wit. Everything she stated generally came across as very likable to the audience. However her viewpoint is a very specific one, and I think there are other ways to look at the issue. During the speech I found key quotes that I will elaborate and give my interpretation to. Ms. Kilbourne clearly states in the being of her presentation, â€Å"The first thing the advertisers do is surround us with the image of ideal female beauty, so we all learn how important it is for a woman to be beautiful, and exactly what it takes.† Kilbourne says this sarcastically: what she’s really doing here is objecting to the use of ‘ideal female beauty’ and that it is important for a woman to be beautiful as advertisers suggest. By using women with these â€Å"ideal† figures exploiting their bodies, centering attention to specific areas to sell merchandise. Though Ms. Kilbourne made solid points; how does she know that advertisers meant to play the ‘ideal’ women card? Her motive being clear makes me wonder. I was taught that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My time working as a model I’ve learned that women in a whole are picked apart like meat at a factory. Judged by our frame, color, and texture of our hair, which c ases a ton of despair amongst young women. True enough I suspect, that she should have given credit to some companies who used a variety, that the beauty of the women displayed are the eyes of a vast majority of beholders, and used by advertisers for that reason? After all, she describes them as possessing ‘ideal female beauty.’ What advertisers are doing, of course, is using models they feel will be attractive to most viewers; which is somewhat true but a tad bit shallow at times. In other words, the question of which came first, the ‘ideal female beauty’ in my mind (including Kilbourne’s) or the advertising depicting it, is fairly easy to answer. We all have an innate idea of what is attractive about women in the first place, and advertisers merely use it to their advantage. Researchers know fairly precisely what this ‘ideal woman’ consists of, with measures of attractiveness including hip-to-waist ratio, symmetry, skin complexion, all of the above. It turns out that these things are mostly objective rather than subjective standards of beauty, and the closer one’s partner approaches perfection, the more attractive they will generally be found. KILBOURNE: â€Å"Turning a human being into a thing is almost always the first step towards justifying violence towards that person.† Kilbourn also stated in her lecture â€Å"Turning a human being into a thing is almost always the first step towards justifying violence towards that person.† My first thought was what was she thinking when she actually made that comment. Throughout this video I was agreeing with her but at this statement changed my entire thought process. What I gathered here was that she was saying that women being objectified in general can and does lead to violence toward us. In actuality it seems to be true but as a whole statement and proving that’s why domestic cases happen, I’m not so sure. But is bringing any extra attention to those torso-shaped perfume bottles’ be wrong? Or any of the other products or art pieces which celebrate or depict the female form. I can totally agree to disagree with this. But

ABDOMINOPLASTY - TUMMY TUCK SURGERY

ABDOMINOPLASTY - TUMMY TUCK SURGERY ABDOMINOPLASTY TUMMY TUCK SURGERY Abdominoplasty or dermolipectomy (â€Å"tummy tuck†) is a procedure by which excess skin and subdermal tissue from the abdomen (so called hanging belly) are removed. Complete musculature of the abdominal wall is tightened. â€Å"Hanging belly† happens mostly to individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight or women who gave several births. Of course, hereditary elements play an important part. TUMMY TUCK CANDIDATES If you want to know if you are a candidate for dermolipectomy, you need to follow these indications: limp and loose belly, excess skin and fatty tissue on the belly, striae on the lower part of the belly and loose and separated muscles of the abdominal wall. PREOPERATIVE ASSESSMENT Patient preparation for the tummy tuck surgery usually starts during the first examination. The first step in preparation for the surgery is the patient’s consent. Very important part is to create that feeling of trust in the doctor-patient relationship. The patient will be informed of surgery process and what surgery includes. During the initial examination you’ll be asked to look in the mirror and show precisely what kind of change you would like to be done to your belly. During the examination you will give data of your medical history of illnesses or surgical treatments you had previously, medicine allergies, chronic infections, hypertension, diabetes, anemia. It is important to provide your doctor with complete information i.e. are you using some medication such as aspirin, estrogen, vitamin C, etc. Examination is performed in standing and lying position. During the examination, level of excess skin and subdermal fatty tissue has to be determined as well as degree of looseness of abdomen wall musculature and possible existence of ventral hernia. TUMMY TUCK PROCEDURE Tummy tuck incision is horizontally-oriented and is made in lower zone of the belly above pubic hairline and spreads lateral in the direction of pelvic bones. Length of the incision is determined by the level of looseness and skin excess. In general, incision is in line with the bathing suit, it is hidden so it can’t be seen on the beach. The complete complex of skin and subdermal tissue are prepared all the way to muscular fascia and up to ribs. Abdominal muscles are tightened and they are connected (plicated) shaping and forming new beautiful body contours. After that excess skin and subdermal tissue are tightened all the way up to navel which is removed. Then a new navel is created and has to look like the real one. Sometimes liposuction needs to be combined with this procedure. Drains are placed that are left for a few days. POSTOPERATIVE TREATMENT Drains will be removed after few days. Until then patient has to be in the position with bent legs. Sutures stay in place about 14 days. After tummy tuck surgery patient need to wear special corsets for a month after the surgery and to avoid physical strains for a month. One day after the surgery short walk is recommended. Patient has to get out of bed and go for a walk in bent position in order to increase blood circulation. Patient must avoid straining, sudden straightening and physical activities. Recommended time for having intercourse is at least after two weeks after the surgery. COMPLICATIONS Complications rarely occur. They are classified as early and late. Early complications include infection, hematoma, necrosis around the incision and usually occur with diabetics and smokers. Seroma can be developed after the surgery. It can accumulate under the skin and in lower parts of abdomen and can be there for a few months after the procedure. Later complications include appearance of hypertrophic scar. Biochemistry and Medicine Information in Pharmacology Assignment

Biochemistry and Medicine Information in Pharmacology - Assignment Example AD brains are particularly marked by neurofibrillary tangles, amyloid plagues, neuronal cell loss, innate immune responses as well as a prominent activation of the glial cells. This paper critically investigates the potential relationship between Alzheimer’s disease, Beta-C kinins and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) as well as their improvement on the cognitive function of patients. Numerous recent empirical studies suggest that the production of a class of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is significantly diminished among the patients suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Generally, BDNF is normally produced in the entorhinal cortex area of the brain (the part involved with cognition and memory) throughout an individual’s life Honea et al., 2013). It is widely believed that the production of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor is particularly enhanced by beta-C kinins, a class of neuropharmacological molecules some of which include AB 123. Although the correlation between the lowered levels of BDNF and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has not been effectively established, studies indicate that neurotrophic factors normally play a critical protective role against amyloid beta toxicity (Mattson, 2008, p.97). This is further supported by the growing number of scientific studies in Alzheimer’s disease that have revealed significant alterations in the immune responses including observable changes in the macrophage and lymphocyte distribution and activation. In a recent study conducted by Weinstein et al(2014), the researchers examined the levels of BDNF in 2131 healthy adults and then followed them for ten years. The results revealed that up to 50% individuals with the highest baseline levels of BDNF were less likely to develop dementia compared to their counterparts with the lowest levels of the molecule. It was concluded that a higher level of BDNF may protect against the occurrence of memory loss.

A Quest for Selfhood Essay Example for Free

A Quest for Selfhood Essay In The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass An American Slave, Frederick Douglass effectively describes his escapes from slaveholders through his intellectual literacy. In virtue of his experience as an enslaved man, Douglass writes about the abuse he suffers for being African American. He writes his narrative for the general public including slaves, to show the slaveholders’ wrongdoings. Douglass portrays the demeaning treatment of slaves to express inhumane conditions, which they face repeatedly. Throughout the novel Douglass is able to persuade his readers that slavery is cruel and an immoral act, through the use of visual imagery, situational irony, and formal diction. Through the use of visual imagery, Douglass is able to persuade the public that the physical scars from slave have dehumanizing effects by describing brutality, and human degradation. On one of Douglass’s first accounts, he describes his mother’s death by stating â€Å"I was not allowed to be present during her illness, at her death, or burial† (Page 18). This incident relates to pathos because it reveals Douglass’s lack of interaction with his mother and the isolation he endures in the early stages of his life, which emotionally draws the reader into realizing the psychological afflictions of slavery. As well as his mother’s passing, Douglass utilizes visual imagery to account for the last days of his frail grandmother: â€Å"If my poor old grandmother now lives, she lives to suffer in utter loneliness; she lives to remember and mourn over the loss of children†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Page 56). Douglass exposes how little sympathy slaveholders possess towards slaves. Visual imagery of this incident persuades the reader of slavery’s savagery because it is clear that Douglass is kept away from the people whom he loves, and is forced to feel nothing but sorrow. Due to the restrictions from slavery, Douglass copes with his aches by describing clear details of the worst days of his life. Likewise, Douglass presents the remorseless treatment of slaves through the use of situational irony. A representation of this is shown within old Barney and young Barney-father and son. He says â€Å"They were frequently whipped when least  deserving, and escaped whipping when most deserving it† (Page 30). Douglass explains that living in a constant state of fear, the boys are never safe from severe punishment regardless of doing everything they’re told. Douglass also uses logos to convince the public that slaveholders are not capable of managing others because they don’t have moral sense. Additionally, Douglass illustrates another situational paradox when he fights back against Mr. Covey: â€Å"From this time I was never again what might be called fairly whipped, though I remained a slave four years afterwards. I had several fights, but was never whipped† (Page 75). Douglass’s fierce determination for freedom results in respect from his slaveholder, which is unbelievable and contradictory to slavery overall. Because of the situational irony from the events prior, Douglass is able to express how irresponsible slaveholders are to be manipulating slaves. Furthermore, formal diction is most prominent is Douglass’s narrative because it describes most of the details. Despite his restrictions, Douglass’s strong desire for education allows for gains in his knowledge, to which is distinct through his writing skills. Douglass’s intellectual literacy not only distresses the general public towards slavery, but mesmerizes them to conceive the idea on how he made it out alive. A prime example of formal diction is shown when describing Mr. Austin Gore: â€Å"Mr. Hopkins was succeeded by Mr. Austin Gore, a man possessing, in an eminent degree, all those traits of character indispensable†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Page 33) He claims that the first-rate overseer, Mr. Gore is superior and honored because of his highly callous acts. Thus, Douglass is able to address a highly educated audience such as the readers of this academic narrative. He then adds, â€Å"Going to live at Baltimore laid the foundation, and opened the gateway, to all my subsequent prosperity† (Page 41). In other words, Douglass desperately wishes for freedom, and is able to fulfill his fortune at Baltimore. Formal diction allows Douglass to put his eloquent vocabulary to use. Although Frederick Douglass was an enslaved man, he teaches himself to read and write. He uses his intellectual gains of writing as a way to portray his brutal life, and explains the struggles he goes through to now being America’s role as the most famous African American slave. Throughout the narrative, he uses rhetorical devices to personify the thoughts that go through his mind as a slave. He also uses figurative language to vividly illustrate the hardships  of being African American with the use of visual imagery, situational irony, and formal diction. These devices also make the tortures of being a slave more understandable and easy to comprehend. His eloquent literacy continues to be relevant in both history and the modern world today.

Letter to Frank in Eveline Essay -- essays research papers

Dear Frank,   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  You have made the biggest difference in my life in so many ways. Ever since my mother died, I have had a tough time getting along with things. You helped me liberate myself, from all the troubles that I know of. How you help me from day to day is priceless and I want you to never forget how much I care about you. You know that our relationship has been stressed on a little because of my father’s relentless attempt to put an end to it. I want you to remember that we did continue to see each other because we know that he is wrong for trying to keep us apart and that we do mean a lot to each other.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  When we decided together to go away and leave everything we know of behind, I felt a bit nostalgic of the idea. I know that I am supposed to be there with you now, but I couldn’t come and I want to explain myself. This whole idea of getting married and moving away came quite quick. You are usually always sailing everywhere, and don’t have too much care for responsibility. Now you want to settle down right away, which befuddles me. I know you want to be with me and mean good, and I the same, but there are other things I must think of in all of this. Another possible problem is your tendency to spend all your money in one shot. We have to learn together to grow and be more responsible if we are to make a big change like getting married, not to mention moving away. You know that wh...

Effects of Child Abuse Essay

Child abuse is a prevailing problem in society that must be addressed at the soonest possible time. However, it is one of the most difficult problems to address as well since there are only certain ways by which it can be monitored. What makes it even harder is the fact that the parents themselves are sometimes the abusers. Thus, it sometimes difficult to help the child since his primary guardian is the abuser himself. Child abuse by parents can be extremely detrimental to children. The effects of such abuse may become evident during their childhood or when the child grows up and enters adulthood. The long-term consequences of child abuse are sometimes grave enough that they ruin the life of the adult. Experiences of child abuse as a child affect not just the personality of the adult but his relationship with his parents as well. For obvious reasons, when parents abuse their children, they strain their relationship with the children. One cannot expect an adult, who was abused by his parent as a child, to maintain a close relationship with them. Child abuse has psychological effects that may hinder the development of the person’s character and identity. This is especially true the abuser is the parent. For instance, the abused child is expected to have low self-esteem that stems from the fact that his own parents do not love him. Abusing him is a clear sign to him that they do not love him. Thus, without his parents’ love, the individual may lack the self confidence and self esteem to function in society.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The abuse causes the child to distance himself from the parent. Later on, as he grows up, this often translates to difficulty in forming attachments with other adults and his peers. The child’s insecurity and lack of self-esteem can extend to his adult life. Thus, when the child becomes an adult, he does not feel secured and more importantly, he lives a restrained life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   These consequences and effects of child abuse do not only affect the individual’s life. These consequences challenge the very ideals upon which the American way of life is built upon. Americans believe that they have the right to have a family who enjoys security and freedom. However, the mere fact that the children are abused within the confines of their very own homes and within their own families, the idea of being secure is greatly eroded. Moreover, the abuse hinders the freedom of the child. As the child grows up, he does so with such American ideals left in ruins. In a way, the abuse he experienced as a child may reflect on how he treats his own children as he forms a family of his own.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The effects of parental child abuse of any kind exhibit themselves as the child becomes an adult. It is an experience that the individual bears with him long after the acts were committed. Not only does the abuse mold his personality, it affects his ideals in life as well. His ideals on family, society, and relationships are changed and may transfer to his own family. Such transfer may become chain reaction which will be to the detriment of society in general. It is for this reason that the problem must be acted on and must be prevented as much as possible.

gary Nash essay essays

gary Nash essay essays In the essay written by Gary Nash, he argues that the reason for the American Revolution was not caused by the defense of constitutional rights and liberties, but that of material conditions of life in America were not very favorable and that social and economic factors should be considered as the driving factor that pushed many colonists to revolt. The popular ideology which can be defined as resonating most strongly within the middle and lower strata of society and went far beyond constitutional rights to a discussion of the proper distribution of wealth and power in the social system had a dynamic role in the decisions of many people to revolt. The masses ideas were not of constitutional rights, but the equal distribution of wealth in the colonies that many felt that the wealth was concentrated in a small percentage of the population in the colonies. The Whig ideology that was long established in English society had a main appeal towards the upper class citizens and had little to say about changing social and economic conditions in America or the need for change in the future. The popular ideologies consisted of new ways of changing the distribution of wealth. Nash in his essay continued to give good evidence to prove his point that the American Revolution was not caused by the defense of constitutional rights and liberties, but by improper distribution of wealth. During the pre-American Revolutionary times, the top five percent of Bostons taxpayers controlled 49 percent of the taxable assets of the community, whereas they had held only held only 30 percent in 1687. As evident by this statistic, it is clear that the wealthy were getting wealthier and controlling more of the taxable assets of the community. As the wealthy increased their assets in the cities, at the same time, a large class was impoverished city dwellers. A huge contrast between the wealthy ...

Sporting Violence Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Sporting Violence - Essay Example h a hockey stick, with a blade or butt, was not a reasonable practice and fell outside the ambit of the implied consent.† (Supra note 25 at 128) and the accused was found guilty of overreacting. Major league baseball considers the commissioner to be the final arbiter of disputes between the clubs and the league and also gives it the authority to impose punishments, much like the NBA and the NHL. (Major League Agreement Art I. (1988) These powers are the result of the uniform player contract and the collective bargaining agreement, that establishes the disciplinary authority of both the team and the commissioner. (CBA of NBA, art 23; exhibit â€Å"standard club rules†) The role of the state and police, along with the courts in restricting sporting violence can be of a limited nature, and the last recourse. This position is taken, based on the fact that rough play is a part of the game, and the competitive edge coupled with the rush of adrenaline, may make players indulge in violent acts. The judges, who are called upon to arbitrate are familiar with the mentality of a sportsperson, and they may not be aware of the unspoken rules of conduct, which are a part of all sports. The role of law as arbiter, comes into focus because when a player steps over the line, if his action is not castigated by the games governing authority because â€Å"where there are obvious infractions of the criminal law, the authorities are duty bound to take whatever action is necessary to prevent a repetition of such conduct.† (R v. Henderson [1976] The court in Hackbart v.Cincinnati Bengel Inc.( Hackbart v Cincinnati Bengal Inc. 601 F2d 516 (19th Cic 1979) said ‘courts are ill suited to decide different social questions and to determine what is an acceptable level of conduct on what is much like a ‘battlefield.† and so just as there are a separate set of laws for the army it is not unreasonable to put sportspersons and sporting violence under the purview of their disciplinary bodies,

Perceived managerial discretion and market competition Research Paper

Perceived managerial discretion and market competition (Principal-agent problem) - Research Paper Example According to the agency theory, the principal-agent problem arises from conditions of incomplete or asymmetric information when one party tries to motivate another party to act on its behalf. These conditions can be observed in any employer/employee relationship. This is because the employer, the shareholders, wants the employees, the managers, to invest in those projects which offer higher returns. However the projects which offer higher returns also have higher uncertainty. Therefore the managers may not want to take the risk. As a result there is a conflict of interest which affects organizational objectives. This is the principal-agent problem which is addressed in the agency theory. In order to maximize organizational performance, the owners of the organization have to introduce incentives which will motivate the managers/employees to act in the best interests of the shareholders. Therefore the motivations of the principal and its agent are aligned strategically. In the current business environment, change is the only constant. Therefore the organizational structure has to be flexible so that the organization can remain competitive in spite of the changes that are taking place in the external environment. A flexible organizational structure enables the principal and the agent to mobilize resources fast so that fast responses to market changes become possible. However if there is a conflict of interest between the two parties, then this objective cannot be attainable. The presence of the principal-agent problem also means that the shareholders are unable to monitor the decision-making process so that the managers are tempted to apply organizational resources to personal gains. This is a limiting factor for organizational performance. Therefore it is critical to address the principal-agent problem. Particularly in the present day business environment which is characterized by high competition, application of the agency theory becomes one of th e key success factors. By incorporating the agency theory, organizational stakeholders create an internal structure which is strategically aligned. Given the fast pace of change in the external environment, both the shareholders and the officers would want to create a sustainable competitive advantage. In order to meet this objective, the management of the company has to optimize the decision making process so that it addresses the interests of both parties. According to Michael Porter’s framework for strategy formulation, an organization can implement three strategies to build a competitive position: focus, differentiation and cost minimization (Hill & Jones, 2007, p. 18). However the effectiveness of strategy implementation is limited by the principal-agent problem. This underscores understanding of the agency theory. By applying the agency theory, the management can align the interests of both parties to synergistic effects. As a result, the organization can
